advise for a newbie

hello list, i just got my APF license last dec , wanted to make a few jumps when i was in germany after my course but change my mind after a student dies there ( his rig ,primary , sec all failed.....)

as of now , i plan to log a few more jumps in australai this dec. however i have a few qus , hope the experience ones out there can adise me :

1) i plan to jump in australia sometime between xams and NY , however it also calses with the aussie's national championships, does anyone out there knows whetehre any DZ's open over this time period ?

2) i wouild like to get my own beginner's rig soon.Is there anyhting i should look out for , any established brands for begineers etc...

3) any webpages i can see for tips etc ?
