Hey~ I was a *200 jump wonder* when we got to AZ on the annual Skydive Hastings trip. Skydive Hastings (see the pics section under the AZ trip) You wanna talk about the 'not being able to stay with anything' problem due to the solo thing. WOW. I was falling at approx. 142 average speed. After 2 coached jumps with my DZO (who was also on the trip) I got not only my 1st 4-pt 4-way, but it was a 6-pt 4-way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What they did to *cure* me was take my arms away for FF. I had to fall with my arms crossed . (have grips on myself.) Scared the shit outta me before and during the 1st 15 or so seconds of FF........ Worked great. What I realized was that I owned the middle portion of my body. This is what you really fly with....... I can now not only fall with the biggest of 'em...(like the 250 lb. folks)....but I can also float above the 90 lb. brats. It all has to do with that torso and how ya stick it out into the breeze. (oh ya, I'm 5'4' and go about 120 lbs.....) Yes, to many solos are VERY bad. You have no idea how you are falling, let alone if you can get into /&/or/ away from a formation. Don't get me wrong, I still love a solo just to get my knees in the breeze with NO stress/worries/requirements/students...../etc..... I can do whatever I want. I can experiment with whateer I want to...I can.... BUT.............. You miss out on knowing if you are doing what you need to to advance in the sport. Makes a difference in the short & long term.
