Howzit?

Just arrived in Oahu and looking for a new rig! Drove to Dillingham at like 10am and saw nobody, but lots of commercialized tamdem factories and billboards for wuffos.

So where are all the fun jumpers, and who has a 135ish canopy & container for a lightweight 5'8' guy? It's actually been 2 years since I felt the wind in my toes, and I think it's time to go up and get some air!

Dillingham is the wrong place for a locally unknown, uncurrent jumper to borrow unfamiliar gear.

The winds there can put one in a real jackpot under a unknown canopy.

Wouldn't a CYPRES fix the problem for him?

Good luck to you. Hawaii is the one place I would least like to jump.

Can you say trade winds? Relatively small landing area?

I've never been to OhuaI was in Maui a few years back ... no skydiving whatsoever on Maui. But I did take a U-fly tour in a small Cessna. Had a great time and amazingly, I did pretty well with it (debrief was actually a pleasant experience) ... But as we were heading back to the airstrip, the plane starting doing 'stupid shit.' I was trying to maintain altitude and doing all the right things to stay down, but the plane wanted to go higher. The instructor finally had to take over and even he was having a rough time. We were caught in an updraft.

I remember thinking ... glad I ain't flying a canopy in this. From what I understand, trade winds are a fact of life on the islands. I would imagine that's why most skydiving is tandem, and highly experienced jumpers. But, of course, I could be wrong ... maybe Oahu is different?

Blue skies ...

Thanks for the replies,

However I think you have greatly mis-interpereted my intent. You see, I have apx 250 jumps, a C license, and am looking to BUY gear to replace that which I sold. The DZ has a relatively small landing area (no smaller than STL in Beeville, Texas ((dodging power lines, tractors, a house and a hanger to hit the plowed 100' X 100' box )) - and certainly has no greater wind! Love that S. Texas 'breeze'.

The DZ is on an airfield with a 9000+ foot runway, and ample room to the sides of the taxi ways for landing off. True, you have water....and lots of it, trades are another factor, BUT no matter where you jump there is a degree of danger. None of us can deny that.

Quincy was by far the most challenging / dangerous DZ I ever jumped at and it had none of these problems. In the military we call is ORM (Op Risk Mgt.)....and as a jumper I call it my comfort zone. I've looked at the DZ, I've flown the canopy setup I am looking for, and I lurked the DZ like a wuffo. Decision is made, and jumping Oahu is a definate 'go' in my mind.

So, just looking for that rig for sale (135-150 Triathalon, Diablo, or Sabre), a nice container and a similar sized reserve.....and CYPRESS).

Thanks again, I'll be waiting for you on the next load!

you just proved his point!!!!

'Dillingham is the wrong place for a locally unknown, uncurrent jumper to borrow unfamiliar gear'

you said it yourself 250 jumps and a C license

no mis interpataion there

does anyone else not know that oahu is a tandem factory???????????????????????

have a gowaylow day

P.S. Why was Quincy challenging for you??????? was it all the open space to land or the extreme difficulty in finding the airport once open?????
